The Northeast Corridor of the United States is home to 17% of the U.S. population and 20% of the U.S. workforce – all on just 2% of the country's land area. But the region lacks efficient inter-city travel and suffers from the nation's worst road congestion. This congestion costs commuters in the just the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan area alone billions of dollars in lost time and productivity, and more than 100 hours stuck in traffic (per person, per year, according to the 2019 Urban Mobility Report).
