The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  30th December 2022

Almost every competitive exam has a section that tests the applicant's English Language skills. So here we bring you The Hindu Vocab on daily basis to boost vocabulary power and help you prepare for the exams like Banking, Railway, Insurance, SSC, and other Government exams.

 'Vocabulary'

  1. Gawking (verb)

Meaning: stare openly and stupidly. (आंखे फाड़कर देखना)

Synonyms: gape, goggle, gaze

Sentence: I hate being gawked at!

  1. Complacency (noun)

Meaning: a feeling of smug or uncritical satisfaction with oneself or one's achievements. (शालीनता)

Synonyms: smugness, self-satisfaction, self-approval

Antonyms: diffidence, modesty, humbleness

Sentence: Doctors have warned against complacency in fighting common diseases.

  1. Intuitive (adj.)

Meaning: using or based on what one feels to be true even without conscious reasoning; instinctive. (स्वाभाविक)

Synonyms: instinctive, intuitional, instinctual

Sentence: Men are often regarded as less intuitive than women.

  1. Acridity (noun)

Meaning: a harsh or sharp quality (कटुता)

Synonyms: bitterness, harshness, severity

Antonyms: mildness, gentleness, kindliness

Sentence: The acridity of the stand-up comedian was a little unexpected.

  1. Addled (adj.)

Meaning: unable to think clearly; confused. (व्याकुल)

Synonyms: dazed, bewildered, confused

Antonyms: conscious, clearheaded

Sentence: One of the more addled audience members confused Ghana with Guyana.

  1. Interdict (noun)

Meaning: an authoritative prohibition. (पाबंदी)

Synonyms: prohibition, ban, embargo

Antonyms: allowing, permission, granting

Sentence: Troops could be ferried in to interdict drug shipments

  1. Bewitched (verb)

Meaning: enchant and delight (someone). (मोहित करना)

Synonyms: fascinate, enchant, entice

Antonyms: offend, annoy, displease

Sentence: They both were bewitched by the country and its culture.

  1. Obligatory (adj.)

Meaning: required by a legal, moral, or another rule; compulsory. (अनिवार्य)

Synonyms: compulsory, mandatory, prescribed

Antonyms: optional, voluntary, elective

Sentence: The college authorities have now made these classes obligatory.

  1. Profundity (noun)

Meaning: deep insight; great depth of knowledge or thought. (बुद्धिमत्ता)

Synonyms: wisdom(deep), insight, intelligence

Antonyms: stupidity, witlessness

Sentence: He lacked profundity and analytical precision.

  1. Unbosom (verb)

Meaning: disclose (one's thoughts or secrets). (प्रकट करना)

Synonyms: disclose, discover, divulge

Antonyms: cloak, conceal, enshroud

Sentence: You'll feel better if you unbosom your sorrows to me.
