The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  2nd December 2022

It is inevitable to work on English Vocabulary if you are preparing for any competitive exams like Banking, Railway, Insurance, SSC, and other Government exams. So here We bring you The Hindu Vocab on daily basis to boost vocab power and helps you in your preparation for different examinations.

 'Vocabulary'

  1. Impasse (noun)

Meaning: a situation in which no progress is possible, especially because of disagreement; a deadlock. (गतिरोध)

Synonyms: deadlock, dead end, stalemate

Sentence: The political process is at an impasse.

  1. Slovenly (adj.)

Meaning: (especially of a person or their appearance) messy and dirty. (गंदा)

Synonyms: scruffy, untidy, messy

Antonyms: stainless, clean, tidy

Sentence: Their table manners perfectly reflect the slovenly appearance.

  1. Etiquette (noun)

Meaning: the customary code of polite behavior in society or among members of a particular profession or group. (शिष्टाचार)

Synonyms: polite behaviour, good manners, manners

Sentence: The couple exhibited poor etiquette when they left the party without saying good-bye to the host and hostess.

  1. Avaricious (adj.)

Meaning: having or showing an extreme greed for wealth or material gain. (लालची)

Synonyms: grasping, acquisitive, covetous

Antonyms: sated, satisfied, controlled

Sentence: An avaricious man is always needy.

  1. Consonance (noun)

Meaning: agreement or compatibility between opinions or actions. (समझौता)

Synonyms: agreement, concord, accord

Antonyms: discordance, conflict, disagreement

Sentence: This type of democracy is in consonance with our own African heritage.

  1. Thaw (verb)

Meaning: (of ice, snow, or another frozen substance, such as food) become liquid or soft as a result of warming. (पिघलना)

Synonyms: liquefy, melt, fuse

Antonyms: harden, set, solidify

Sentence: The snow started to thaw as the temperature kept up.

  1. Fanatical (adj.)

Meaning: filled with excessive and single-minded zeal. (कट्टर)

Synonyms: zealous, extremist, rabid

Antonyms: nonmilitant, nonrevolutionary, liberal

Sentence: As a boy he was a fanatical patriot.

  1. Contemn (verb)

Meaning: treat or regard with contempt. (नफ़रत करना)

Synonyms: despise, disdain, treat with contempt

Antonyms: honor, respect

Sentence: Arrogant critics who contemn the general public's taste in art.

  1. Withal (adv.)

Meaning: in addition; as a further factor or consideration. (साथ ही साथ)

Synonyms: additionally, furthermore, as well

Sentence: She is fair and a wise lady withal.

  1. Extirpated (verb)

Meaning: root out and destroy completely. (समाप्त करना)

Synonyms: destroy, eradicate, root out

Antonyms: conserved, preserved, protected

Sentence: The triumph of modern medicine in extirpating certain diseases.
