"So how exactly do disabilities come about in leprosy?" Dr Alfred questioned Beanie.
"Either directly due to the motor disturbance or ... untreated [or less treated] injuries due to the lack of sensory pain," he answered.
"Indeed: pain is important, isn't it? A knife stab and you keep your hands away but when you don't feel it, not good for you."
That last bit spoke so much to me:
It's painful, so painful, liking her. But it is exactly the pain that keeps me sane.
