Exploring Chester

I was born and brought up in Liverpool and this is where I feel most at home. I've lived on the Wirral for over 30 years, but Chester isn't somewhere I've spent much time.

Simon wasn't born in Chester but lived a large portion of his life in and around the area so it was his turn to be the tour guide and show me round his haunts.

We started at the castle, I didn't know Chester had one so that was an unexpected surprise. It's o lay small and portions of it have been removed I've rather years, but plenty remains including a beautiful chapel still in use.

Outside the castle, across the square is a military museum. There are a few rooms detailing the history of the Mercian regiment. Although a part was closed off for a private function, there was still plenty to see and learn.

Following this we wandered up towards the main shopping area, visiting a couple of pubs that Simon had worked in during his youth. Very old and interesting buildings with plenty of history.

After a stop for lunch we walked down towards the river and found ourselves at a new attraction, Sick to death - the history of medicine. What a fun place, a little gory, gruesome but fascinating. Lots of hands on exhibits, some things to smell and plenty to avoid ! There was even an 'adults only' section that every teenager should see. That was gruesome. We also learnt that the Patron saint of pandemics is St Corona, appropriate for the current outbreak.

You can't visit Chester and not take a walk down to the river Dee. It was a calm, chilly but clear day and the boat cruise was just about to depart so we hopped onboard. As we set off Simon was pointing things out, places and telling me tales of the area, followed closely by the guide on the cruise retelling the same stories.

As it was getting to late afternoon we started to make our way back towards the car walking along the famous Chester walls. Thankfully it wasn't windy as Simon seems to have developed a phobia of walking along high walls with me, I'm not sure why !

It was a lovely and interesting day for me, learning some of the history of Chester and hearing little stories of Simon's past.
