The steel man of India Jamshed J Irani

Indian industrialist Jamshed J Irani, known as the steel man of India, died in Jamshedpur at the age of 85. Irani was survived by his wife Daisy Irani and his three children, Zubin, Niloufer and Tanaaz.

Jamshed J Irani had associated with Tata Steel for over four decades. He retired from the board of Tata Steel in June 2011 and leaving behind a legacy of 43 years, which won him and the Company international acclaim in various fields.

Jamshed J Irani:

Born: June 2, 1936

Jamshed J Irani was born in Nagpur to Jiji Irani and Khorshed Irani. Mr. Irani had completed his BSc from Science College, Nagpur in 1956 and MSc in Geology from the Nagpur University in 1958.

Education: After completing master he went to the University of Sheffield in UK as a J N Tata scholar, where he attained a Masters in Metallurgy in 1960, and a PhD in Metallurgy in 1963.

Career:

Irani had started his professional career with the British Iron and Steel Research Association in Sheffield in 1963.
He had always yearned to contribute to the Nation's progress so he came back to India to and join the Tata Iron and Steel Company (now Tata Steel).
In 1968 Jamshed J Irani was joined the firm as Assistant to the Director in-charge of Research and Development.
Due to his intelligence and hard work he was promoted as General Superintendent in 1978 and General Manager in 1979.

Serving to key positions:

He became the President of Tata Steel in 1985. Dr. Jamshed J Irani was assigned as Joint Managing Director of Tata Steel in 1988, and Managing Director in 1992, before retiring in 2011.
Apart from member of the Board of Tata Steel in 1981, he was also a Non-Executive Director from 2001 for a decade.
Jamshed J Irani had worked with Tata Steel and Tata Sons. Dr Irani also served as a Director of several Tata Group companies, including Tata Motors and Tata Teleservices.
In 2004, Dr. Jamshed J Irani had been appointed by Government of India as the Chairman of the Expert Committee for formation of the new Companies Act of India.
He had served as the Chairman of Board of Governors at Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow.

Awards:

He was bestowed an honorary knighthood(KBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 1997.
The Government of India had honored Dr. Jamshed J Irani with country's third highest civilian award the Padma Bhushanin 2007.
The steel man of India was appointed an International Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1996.
