Historic move by BCCI: Equal Pay Policy for men and women cricketers

In a landmark move, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made a decision recently to implement a new pay equity policy for its contracted women cricketers for paying men and women cricketers the equal match fees.

Decision by BCCI Apex Council:

The members of the 15th BCCI Apex Council has just passed the resolution unanimously to pay equally to all men and women cricketers. The decision has been lauded by Indian cricket players on through social media platforms.

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has also welcomed the decision and encouraged a step towards gender equality in the game and erasing discrimination from the sport.

After effect from the pay equal policy:

Women cricketers are now eligible to be paid the same match fee as the men cricket players.

Indian women's cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur has tweeted that it is a truly a red letter day for Women's Cricket in India with pay parity announced for women and men.

The newly-appointed President of the BCCI, Roger Binny has informed that our women players will be paid the same match fees as men in international cricket and the decision places the platform to grow and develop cricket.

Pay policy for cricketers:

Before the policy the match fee for each Test, ODI and T20 for the men and Indian women's cricketers are different. Cricketers have earned Rs 4 lakhs for test matches, and Rs 1 lakh for T20s and ODIs.

But after the equally pay policy, there is equal match fee for both women and men. The fee of test matches at Rs 15 lakhs, ODI matches at Rs 6 lakhs and T20I at Rs 3 lakhs.

Men cricketers gets between Rs 7 crore and Rs 1 crore depending on their grade for playing a higher number of games.

Equal pay parity in other countries:

The first country in the world to do this kind of decision was New Zealand in July 2022. New Zealand Cricket, the governing body for professional cricket in the country, and the players' association has made an agreement of a five-year so that both international and domestic level-women players are now eligible to get equal match fees as men across all formats and competitions.

Cricket Australia is also discussing the possibility of equal pay policy in their cricket teams for men and women.
