The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  10th October 2022

Vocabulary plays a vital role in scoring good marks in the English section of various competitive exams that you can improve if you work in the right direction.  'Vocabulary'

  1. Purported (adj.)

Meaning: appearing or stated to be true, though not necessarily so; alleged. (कथित)

Synonyms: conjectural, hypothetical, supposed

Antonyms: inducible, inductive

Sentence: The document is purported to be 300 years old.

  1. Iconoclast (noun)

Meaning: a person who does not conform to generally accepted standards or customs (संप्रदायवादी)

Synonyms: counterculturist, deviant, nonconformist

Antonyms: conformer, conformist

Sentence: But he shows little sign of being an iconoclast.

  1. Promontory (noun)

Meaning: a point of high land that juts out into a large body of water; a headland. (चोटी)

Synonyms: headland, ness, point

Sentence: Yet another fortress stands on a promontory only half a mile away.

  1. Luminary (noun)

Meaning: a person who inspires or influences others, especially one prominent in a particular sphere. (प्रभावशाली व्यक्ति)

Synonyms: guiding light, inspiration, leader

Sentence: Luminaries from the worlds of sports, entertainment, and politics were at the gala.

  1. Pilferage (noun)

Meaning: the action of stealing things of little value. (चोरी)

Synonyms: filching, pilfering, purloining

Sentence: Surveillance practices reduce theft and pilferage in the workplace.

  1. Antithesis (noun)

Meaning: a thing that is the direct opposite of something else (विलोम)

Synonyms: (direct) opposite, converse, reverse

Antonyms: synonym, replica, duplicate

Sentence: Slavery is the antithesis of freedom.

  1. Querulous (adj.)

Meaning: Complaining in a petulant or whining manner. (विलापी)

Synonyms: petulant, complaining, fretful

Antonyms: forbearing, tolerant, uncomplaining

Sentence: He became increasingly dissatisfied and querulous in his old age.

  1. Poltroonery (noun)

Meaning: a shameful lack of courage in the face of danger (कायरता)

Synonyms: cowardice, cowardliness, cravenness

Antonyms: bravery, courage, daring

Sentence: He was disgraced with Poltroonery.

  1. Mire (noun)

Meaning: a situation or state of difficulty, distress, or embarrassment from which it is hard to extricate oneself. (मुसीबत में फसना)

Synonyms: rattrap, difficult situation

Sentence: We must not be drawn into the mire of civil war.

  1. Hanker (verb)

Meaning: feel a strong desire for or to do something. (लालायित होना)

Synonyms: yearn, crave, desire

Antonyms: abhor, abominate, despise

Sentence: What did you hanker after most when you were in prison?
