This year I asked Kitty what kind of treat she would like to help me bake for Halloween. She decided that gingerbread cookies are her favorite, so we plan to make gingerbread cookies on Halloween–in costume!
I loved making my own costumes as a teenager and it's even more fun to make them with Kitty. The first year we celebrated Halloween, I sewed a dinosaur tail for Kitty and bought her brown pajamas to go with it. Kitty subsequently decided that all holidays required a costume so I've created many more costumes for Kitty over the years. This year Kitty decided early on that she wanted to be Spiderman for Halloween. I wasn't sure my sewing skills were up to Spiderman. I looked at costumes online and thought about buying one, but I wasn't sure, so I dithered.
A couple of weeks ago my mom was chatting with Kitty, and she mentioned how much fun she'd had creating her own costumes as a kid. All of a sudden Kitty's eyes lit up and she ran off to dig through her large stash of dress-up clothes to assemble her own costume for Halloween. She came up with all kinds of things, one after another. Right now, I believe Kitty is planning to be a vampire cat, but that could change again any minute.
Seeing Kitty take charge of planning and making her own Halloween costume is one of the events in her childhood that I will remember and treasure.
