"When you are young you have raw smarts; when you are old you have wisdom. When you are young you can generate lots of facts; when you are old, you know what they mean and how to use them."
From Strength to Strength by Arthur C. Brooks
The old ... should, it seems have their physical labors reduced; their mental activities should actually be increased. They should endeavor, too, by means of their counsel and practical wisdom to be as much service as possible to their friends and to the young and above all, to the state.
Cicero
"Wisdom is with the aged and understanding in length of days." Job 12:12
The Bible
All of these quotes stress the idea that as we get older, we grow in wisdom-- or at least, we should. Here's a description of the gift of wisdom and what it can contribute:
WISDOM: The gift of wisdom is the special ability that God gives to certain members of the Body of Christ to know the mind of the Holy Spirit in such a way as to receive insight into how given knowledge may best be applied to specific needs arising in the Body of Christ. Contributes: Guidance
As we age, we can move from a more active role to one in which we mentor and advise. This is still an important and should be taken seriously. Older adults often know from experience what will work and what won't. They have been through many trials and can offer comfort and understanding. If you are young, listen to and respect the wisdom of your elders. If you are older, be quick to offer to assistance, in a way that is humble and kind. Young and old, we must work together in the Body of Christ.
"Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future." Proverbs 19:20
