India's new Chief Defence of Staff: Anil Chauhan

A retired Lt. General Anil Chauhan has been appointed as the next India's Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). The top position was vacant with the sudden demise of Bipin Rawat following a helicopter crash on 8 December 2021.

The appointment follows amid efforts by the government to give a big push to indigenisation in the equipment for defence forces.

Lt. General Anil Chauhan:

Born: 18^th May 1961

General Anil Chauhan has became the first retired officer to be appointed to the position after the Centre's new rules for selecting a CDS marked retired personnel as eligible.
He is the retired Commanding officer at the Eastern Army in May last year.
He is currently serving as the Military Advisor to the National Security Council.
Earlier, Lt. General Anil Chauhan had also served as a United Nations mission to Angola.

The post of Chief of Defence Staff:

The Chief of Defence Staff is the most senior uniformed officer in rank.
The first among equals -- the only four-star officers in the country are the CDS, the chiefs of the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force.
The CDS considered being the single point of contact for the government for giving military advice.
The person on the post of CDS is the senior-most bureaucrat in the defence ministry which has four major departments.

Lt Gen Anil Chauhan as Army Officer:

The Anil Chauhan had commanded in the rank of Major General at the Infantry Division in the critical Baramula sector in the Northern Command.
He was become the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command from September 2019 and held the charge until his retirement from the service in May 2021.
In addition to the command appointments he the officer who had also tenanted important staff appointments including the charge of Director General of Military Operations.
Even the retirement from the Army, he continued to contribute to national security and strategic matters.

Awards given to Lt Gen Anil Chauhan:

Lt General Anil Chauhan has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal for his distinguished and illustrious service in the Army.
