Dr Benjamin Maschel is having a hard time securing funding for his research. One day he receives an official letter of a suspicious nature. A secret organization is interested in giving him a grant, but he has to meet them in person in order to learn the nature of his assignment. He is also to keep all dealings with this organization secret. Enclosed in the letter is a flight ticket to London. He has also been gifted a hundred thousand dollars locked in a money market fund. It will mature at the end of his visit.
Throwing all caution to the wind, Ben does exactly as the letter says and refrains from researching the organisation to verify their credibility. His departure date finally arrives and he takes his flight to London. The rest of his trip is shrouded in mystery. His travel companions refuse to tell him where they are going and even drug him for the remainder of the journey.
Ben is already polarized by this experience, the more he learns about these people the less he wants to work with them. Finally they reach their destination and his host, Jaher, tries his best to explain what Ben is really doing at Journey's End, the mysterious protected place they've brought him to. He still thinks he's there to receive a research grant, but he's in for a rude shock.
Guarding the Past is a thrilling historical fiction about a secret order of protectors dating back to Bibilical times. Ben is a part of their lineage and he has been summoned back to homebase because his great uncle needs him to take over from him. The problem is that Ben never knew all this before, his entire life has been a lie. He honestly thought his adopted parents were his bio parents. On top of that the responsibility may prove too great to bear.
This is a page turner. The characters are well rounded and believable, especially Ben. You will either identify with him or be terribly anguished at his decisions. There will be betrayal and strife and many moments of suspense.
