Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints, Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, Ephesians 1:15-18
When God granted Solomon anything he wanted, what did Solomon ask for? Wisdom, (1 Kings 3)in fact then he wrote the whole book of Proverbs based on his wisdom he received by God through the Holy Spirit.
The Apostle Paul prayed continually to God for the Christians of Ephesus to receive spiritual wisdom. It's important that we understand the gift that God has given us, the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit, to discern good and evil. The world doesn't have this wisdom, the world lives by the wisdom of the flesh and ego, both are very flawed. But the pure wisdom of God is never wrong, and has deeper knowledge than any human could ever grasp.
Notice what Paul says here "give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him (Christ)" How do we know the real Jesus? We know him by the Holy Spirit, we know Christ by the revelation of the Word of God. How do we understand the Bible? By the spiritual wisdom given to us by God. It's all connected, and it all begins at our moment of becoming Born Again in Christ (John 3:3)
"The eyes of your understanding being enlightened" When you become Born Again, the scales fall off your eyes, your sinful nature is revealed and your need for cleansing by Christ is established. When you become saved, you look back at your old self, and you probably feel horrified about who you were, if not then you probably didn't become Born Again. The enlightenment of the Holy Spirit is a powerful transformation, once you have been called by the Risen Lord, you will never be the same again
What else can we learn from Gods wisdom? How about your purpose in life, as Paul says "that you make know what is the hope of his calling" Before Christ, you probably had no purpose, found things to fill your time with no longterm meaning. But now you have been called to an eternal duty, to serve The Lord and help build his eternal Kingdom. Life now has meaning, you have an important calling on your life!
Paul also said " The natural man does not understand things from the Spirit of God" (1 Cor. 2:14) Without the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit, you don't understand your depravity, you don't even know the real Jesus Christ. But I pray that the Holy Spirit gives you the Godly wisdom through our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen!
