The other day I went to a coffee shop and when the employee swung the iPad around there was a inquiry on the payment page if I wanted to include a tip on a simple cup of coffee which I was purchasing for under $5. Since the employee was grinding down the grounds, making the actual drink up a bit, I added on a small tip - it was actually a lot more than what the amount suggested but as I said, he made a fresh cup of coffee, it went beyond just pouring something that was already made.
Two months ago, I was out in another small coffee shop area and all I ordered was a muffin. The employee opened the glass door, picked out the muffin and put it into a brown paper bag. Again, this establishment had an iPad which when it was spun around asked if I wanted to tip. That time I did not add on anything extra. My justification was that they did not do anything extra to my service. All they did was open the display area where the muffin was and bagged it. Am I in the wrong? I don't believe so. In places where I have to serve my own water/soft drink, where I seat myself and pick up my fork but all that gets brought to me is the plate/meal then I do not tip. In full restaurants where they serve refills then I do leave a tip. An additional service is being provided to me.
