A little status update. My 30 day plan is on track. Maybe even ahead of schedule. I have lost 3 pounds. To achieve these progress I have forgone high calorie desserts in favor of fresh fruits. I have stopped my love affair with root beer for now, in favor of Citrus flavored carbonated water. I am swimming every afternoon. It is not hard. I just remind myself of the goal. I stop and think before I eat something. The exercise I am doing is relaxing and peaceful. No one is using the pools in this heat. I have them all to myself, well me and the lizards, birds, and whatever else is stirring in the bushes.
It is funny how I have adapted to this so well. I bought some swimming goggles because the chlorine gets to my eyes. I bought ear plugs because the water was getting trapped in my ears. Now I am mostly swimming laps and less walking in the shallows. For some reason I had it in my head that a lap in the pool was up and back. It is really one direction. I am up to 12 now. However, if you are talking distance, an Olympic pool lap is 50 meters, while most lap pools are only 25. Maybe it is up and back by that definition. Plus our pools are clover shaped. I am not even sure if it is 25 meters. I do know when I am breathing too hard though, and that is when I stop to rest. Actually, the ear plugs have made me more aware of my breathing as I can hear my own body better than anything in the out of doors.
The results this week make me happy. I know not to expect that much each week as the newness wears off. I hope to maintain and at least average 2 pounds a week.
The number of lengths you should swim in 30 minutes depends on the workout. If you are talking about just swimming freestyle for 30 minutes straight, then a good guideline would be about 20-30 lengths for beginners, around 40-50 lengths for intermediate swimmers, and roughly 60 lengths for advanced swimmers.
According to that standard I am halfway to being a beginner. But I am obese and old so I am allowing for that to be a lower number. 20 lengths is about a quarter of a mile. I am doing an eighth of a mile. I feel good about that, no ambulances necessary. Over time I will get stronger and increase my laps.
