Dallas Police are investigating a death in custody at 8300 John W. Carpenter Freeway
On August 30, 2022, at about 8:00 AM, the U.S. Marshals Task Force, which includes members of the Dallas Police Department, received information that Rufino Olmos, 45, was at the La Quinta Hotel at 8300 John W. Carpenter Freeway. Task Force members were looking for Olmos, who had felony warrants out of the Austin Police Department for Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Child and Indecency with a Child.
The preliminary investigation determined a Dallas Police Officer saw Olmos walk out of the east door of the hotel toward the front parking lot and get into an SUV. Task Force members then drove and positioned their vehicles behind Olmos' vehicle, blocking him in. At this time, police then told Olmos repeatedly to show his hands and he did not comply.
A Dallas Police Officer approached the passenger side of the vehicle and used a pry bar to break the right back window to allow officers to see Olmos inside. An officer then reports seeing Olmos with a black pistol in his hand, pointed backward at his chest, with his thumb inside the trigger guard. Officers then heard one gunshot.
A Dallas Police Officer removed the pistol from Olmos' lap and placed it onto the hood of the Olmos' vehicle.
Olmos was taken to a local hospital by Dallas Fire Rescue, where he died at 8:31 a.m.
No officers discharged their weapons, and no officers were injured.
The Dallas Police Special Investigations Unit is conducting a death in custody investigation.
The Office of Police Community Oversight and Dallas County District Attorney's Office were made aware of the incident.
The District Attorney's Office will conduct their own investigation.
