Growing up, there is this lady, a very active and passionate woman, my father's step aunt (co-wife to my father's aunt) but she is a great personality. She had a number of grandchildren that she was taking care of back then, and often you will find new ones every now and then. I remember her making pancakes that she would sell for survival, making mats, selling tap water and selling anything that will bring in any cash for survival. A widow, she is a very hardworking woman and I never heard that she was unable to take care of any of her grandchildren or children. Even when you visited, she always had something to share with you, does not matter how small, she always shared.
During the lock down, I made a decision to share the little I had with people I thought were in need. I thought about her, and the children she is always taking care of. I made the phone call and introduced myself. She made the loudest, sincere heart-warming ululation. She sounded very happy to hear from me. A few minutes into the conversation, she told me, "Mabel, I am finally a land lord. You may not believe this but, at 65years I am a land lord now." I could hear the fulfilment in her voice, I was delighted, and my heart was warmed. She told me, "I was tired of the frying pan fire. The fact that I am growing older, I did not need to stay near the frying pan and the fire anymore. And God heard my prayers, I am a landlord now. All I do now is making mats while seated down". The kind of satisfaction in her voice, the sense of security, having a guaranteed flow of income, not having to worry about the next meal all these were priceless. I called my mother for our usual checking phone calls. I was excited to narrate to her how my conversation had gone with "jjajja mu Nuume" as we always referred to her. Surprisingly, my mother too drew inspiration from her story. We had space home and the next thing I knew, my mother had taken a loan without even discussing with me and started building rental property. She only informed me when she was financially stuck and unable to continue with the construction. I was delighted. The next time I went home, I visited "jjajja mu Nuume" and I was impressed at how much younger she looked, her usual wide smile, welcoming warm hugs, oh she was a happy old woman. She took me to visit the premises, with her making more plans for the place; she seemed so productive. Seeing my mother's work, although she had not yet completed her rentals, she had this gratitude and sense of fulfilment with her. I was happy. I was inspired too.
