Studies indicate that a faulty childhood and family relationships are the biggest contributing factors that push one to become a narcissist. It is also impossible to live with a narcissist and not pick some fleas. So it is important to examine ourselves and also ask those who are close to us to comment on areas that they find challenging when they interact with us.
Empathy is what makes us human and sadly this cannot be traced in the DNA of a narcissist. They are blind to their own hurtful behavior and they never see anything wrong with the way they treat people around them. They are self-absorbed and do not identify the feelings of other people.
They require excessive admiration therefore having the tendency to display their accomplishments and successes to prove the point that they are way better than other people.
They have a tendency of leveraging other people successes in order to uplift themselves or else they will have to swallow the bitter pill that someone else is way above them. That is why they won't hesitate to belittle other people and make them feel like they are less capable and less worthy.
It's either their way or the highway. When things do not go their way they overreact and spew abuses because they always feel they need to be in control. That is why they get angry when things don't go their way because they feel threatened that they are losing the power of control.
They always feel the need to be constantly affirmed and acknowledged and that is why they do things that require attention. You have to constantly tell them they are smart, intelligent and beautiful because that is what they require in order to survive. If they don't get this "narcissistic supply" they look for people to exploit and their ego is massaged.
They think they know it all and are free from any error. There is always a need for them to give an opinion even when it is uncalled for. When their opinion is rejected they will be quick to brand you as stupid for not considering their point of view.
They will do anything to provoke you then wait for you to lash out. This is because they want to have a stage to show everyone how they can win against anyone because they are smarter and better.
They have a tendency of tarnishing people's reputation by giving out false information. They will do anything to destroy you then celebrate because they thrive at the expense of other people's misery. They work hard to convince others about the concepts they have about you.
They are envious of other people's progress because it reminds them of their failures especially if it's a level they have been aiming for. They will react by being critical and try to water down someone's progress.
