Read 274.) Psalm 78. We recently read of 10 psalms that almost certainly pertained to Israel's exile. Here now, we will consider some 11 psalms in 3 readings that read for all the world like they were written during this period of temple and city reconstruction and restoration about this time of 516 BC. The first and the longest of these psalms is this one, Psalm 78 that we will now read…
Psalm 78 has 72 verses and spans some 3 ½ pages of my Bible. What can we take away from this beautiful psalm? The psalmist opens by saying he has valuable words of instruction. What are they? Verses 3 thru 8 tell us that we must speak of the Lord to our children and our children's children and so pass down the faith from one generation to the next. Verses 9 thru 16 relate The 2nd and 4th Promises and Prophecies of Israel's unfaithfulness and of their exodus out of Egypt. And on he goes concerning Israel's failings and of God's great grace and mercy toward them in His own faithfulness with verses 17 all the way thru 50.
But we then note something truly special beginning at verse 51 and thru to the end at verse 72. See this! Verses 51 thru 54 speak to The 2nd Promise and Prophecy of Israel, that of God's deliverance of Israel from out of Egypt. Then with verse 55 we read of The 3rd Promise and Prophecy of God giving to Israel His Promised Land. Next, and with verses 56 thru 61 we can plainly read of The 4th Prophecy of Israel's unfaithfulness and the breaking of their covenant with the Lord. This goes right into the matter of The 5th Prophecy of ancient Israel and how that God would cause nations to overthrow her and take her into captivity and exile. This is seen in verses 62 thru 64. Do you see and are you following all of this? What does it mean? Well, we are not through yet. Then, from verse 65 and to the end, we read of The 6th Promise and Prophecy of Israel's present return and restoration back in her Promised Land, but also of, get this now, her final and ultimate restoration, with verses 69 thru 72, we see the time of the end, of the Millennial Kingdom, when David will be raised back up to take his place once again over Israel.
There is one last matter of great importance in what we read here, and that is that our thesis that the Bible story, when read chronologically, demonstrates for every reader this prophesied 7-point outline that God gave in the beginning of the story to show Himself, demonstrate His power and to prove His existence. And then, by causing a perfect record of His works to be written and preserve to tell us all about these things from very early times, down to our very day, proves that He caused that to happen and that we hold in our hands what He told us this was… The very Word of the One True and Living God. He is! It's what the Book is all about!
