Read 263.) Psalms 44, 74, 79, 80, 85 and 89. Scholars believe that as many as 10 of the Psalms were penned during the time of the Exile, between the years 605 and 539 BC. With this reading and the next, we will look at 10.
Psalm 44 is considered to be one of these. Verses 2 and 3 relate to The 3rd Promise and Prophecy of the taking of the Promised Land. Beginning at verse 9 it speaks to The 5th Prophecy of Israel's exile, that period which we are now in. But note verses 17 thru 22. What do we have here? Is it a self-justification? Are these words of denial as though The 4th Prophecy of Israel's unfaithfulness had never been spoken by God? What did He say but that Israel had been unfaithful from the very time He had brought them out of Egypt! The last 4 verses are a cry for deliverance and relief. Psalm 74 is also thought to be one of these. Note the ruination described in the beginning. Verse 7 even notes the burning of the Temple. The psalm turns after verse 11 to recount the past and appeal to God for a future deliverance and restoration, The 6th Promise and Prophecy, which would come.
Psalm 79 opens the same, Jerusalem and the Temple are gone. The first 5 verses note Judah's destruction. From there to the end, the psalmist appeals to God for Israel's restoration which came some 2 generations after her fall. Psalm 80 is a most beautiful prayer and appeal to God for Israel's renewal. It also recounts The 2nd and 3rd Promises and Prophecies of her Exodus and Promised Land in verse 8 with mention of The 5th Prophecy of her Exile beginning at verse 12 and a final plea to The 6th Promise and Prophecy of her restoration. Is verse 17 Messianic? Indeed!
Psalm 85 reads in a similar manner, going from past, to present to the future. It speaks somewhat cryptically of her destruction, her exile in disfavor, and that time of future restoration for which she longed. Psalm 89 is somewhat lengthy. After extolling God's love and faithfulness, it goes to the Davidic Covenant of Messiah. Verses 27 thru 29 go straight to Messiah, to Jesus! This will be eternal! But for that present time, beginning at verse 38, Judah has been rejected, and Jerusalem reduced to rubble. The closing appeal to God is there, asking that there might be a restoration, which God had promised that He would bring about. It is The 6th Promise and Prophecy given by God unto Moses concerning ancient Israel's history, prophesied beforehand by God… It will all play out over the next 1,000 years after Moses and 1406 BC, that God might prove His existence and power unto all that would look for Him. It's what the Book is all about!
