Brain Hemorrhage – It refers to bleeding in the brain and this medical condition is known as an intracranial hemorrhage or brain bleed. When an artery in the brain bursts that causes localized bleeding in the surrounding tissues then brain hemorrhage occurs. This type of bleeding kills the cell in the brain and is also a type of stroke. Brain hemorrhage is also known as intracerebral hemorrhages, cerebral hemorrhages, and intracranial hemorrhages.

Symptoms of a brain hemorrhage – The symptoms of a brain hemorrhage may depend on the health conditions of an individual. The symptoms can occur gradually or suddenly in a person. There are several common symptoms of a brain hemorrhage are given below –

  1. Severe and sudden headaches
  2. Changes in eyesight
  3. Problem in swallowing
  4. Seizures
  5. Difficulty in writing or reading
  6. Loss of coordination and balance
  7. Vomiting or nausea
  8. Decreased alertness or lethargy
  9. Loss of consciousness

Causes of brain hemorrhages – There are several causes of brain hemorrhage are given below –

  1. High blood pressure – If high blood pressure occurs for a long time, then it may weaken blood vessel walls. So, untreated high blood pressure is the main cause of brain hemorrhages.
  2. Head trauma – A severe head trauma or injury due to an accident is also the main cause of brain hemorrhages.
  3. Bleeding disorders – Both sickle cell anemia and hemophilia can reduce the level of blood platelets and clotting which may increase the risk of brain strokes or hemorrhage.
  4. Aneurysm – It is a weakening in a blood vessel wall which swells and may burst and bleed in the brain and resulting in a stroke.
  5. Brain tumors – If you are suffering from a brain tumor then it may increase the risk of experiencing brain strokes.
  6. Amyloid angiopathy – It is a type of abnormality which occurs in the walls of blood vessels due to high blood pressure and aging. This type of abnormality of the blood vessels walls can cause several small unnoticed bleeds before causing a large one.

Prevention – There are several steps that lower the risk factors that help in preventing brain hemorrhages are given below –

  1. Treat high blood pressure – If you are suffering from high blood pressure for a long period then you should treat or reduce high blood pressure by medication, exercise, and diet. When you reduce the blood pressure then it may lower the risk of brain hemorrhages.
  2. Avoid drugs – You should not consume drugs such as cocaine that may reduce the risk of brain strokes or hemorrhages.
  3. Use Helmet – If you will ride a motorcycle or scooter or play cricket then you should always wear a helmet that can protect the head injury and reduce the risk of a brain hemorrhage.
  4. Examine remedial surgery – If you are suffering from abnormalities such as aneurysms then surgery may beneficial in preventing future bleeding.
  5. Use seat belt – You should wear a seat belt during driving that may help in preventing injury to the head and reduce the risk of a brain hemorrhage.
