John 11:33-37 – When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him, and he was deeply troubled. "Where have you put him?" he asked them. They told him, "Lord, come and see." Then Jesus wept. The people who were standing nearby said, "See how much he loved him!" But some said, "This man healed a blind man. Couldn't he have kept Lazarus from dying?"
Many of us as believers struggle with God in our time of prayer. We ask for things for ourselves and for others. We seek changes in health and financial complications, not to mention relationship conflicts in our life. I've often caught myself in deep emotion, wondering what will move the Lord to respond. If I pray longer, if I pray harder, if I feel more emotion in my spirit, will God hear me and answer?
Here we see Christ as He approaches Lazarus's tomb after speaking to both Martha and Mary. They both came to the Lord with intense emotion and spirit. They both expressed to the Lord that, "Had you been here, my brother would not have died." I cannot really say what the difference was, other than Mary appeared to be struggling emotionally to the point of crying as she fell on her knees before the Lord.
But what was obvious was that they both showed the Lord what was in their hearts. We know that when Jesus saw Mary crying, He was moved in His Spirit. After asking where they had placed him, they said come and see. It was at that moment that Jesus wept.
So, why then did Jesus weep? The Jews said it was because He must have loved Lazarus so much. But I am convinced it was because He loved them all so much. Both Martha, Mary, Lazarus, and all those who were present.
For us as believers, there are no magical words or emotions that moves the Lord to act or speak. You can't pray harder. You cannot speak to Him with more intensity in the hopes that He will listen. Because He is listening and He loves you where you are, all the time, to the point that He weeps with you, whether in your joy or in your despair.
I think the best way to describe our Lord is that He feels you even deeper than you feel yourself, as that is the depth of His love.
