- A report titled 'Road accidents in India- 2020′ has been released by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) under which it shows a sharp decline in road accidents in 2020 as compared to 2019.
- The report also highlights, that according to the previous year's (since 2016) total road accidents decreased by 18.46 percent.
- The number of deaths has also decreased by 12.84% and the number of injuries also decreased by 22.84 percent.

- Total road accidents: 3,66,138
- Death: 1,31,714
- Injuries: 3,48,279

The maximum number of black spots are located in:
- Tamil Nadu (748)
- West Bengal (701)
States that reported fewer fatalities and road accidents in 2020:
- Kerala
- Tamil Nadu
- Uttar Pradesh
The highest accident severity reported:
- Mizoram
- Bihar
- Punjab
- Around 60 percent of the Indian states have reported accident severity that is higher than the national average (36).
- The severity of road accidents is calculated by the number of deaths caused per 100 accidents.
- The national average of the country increased to 36 in 2020 from 33.7 in 2019, the highest in the last two decades. In 2000, it was 20.2.
Comparing 2020 and 2019 data:
- The total road accidents in 2020 decreased by 18.46 percent.
- The number of deaths due to road accidents reduced by 12.84 percent.
- In 2020, the number of injured also declined by 22.84 percent.
- In 2020, the fatal accidents also dipped by 12.23 percent to 1,20,806 in 2020 from 1,37,689 in 2019.
According to the report:
In 2020
- Out of the total road accidents:
- National Highways: 32%,
- Other roads: 43%, and
- State Highways: 25%

- Over speeding accounted: 69%
- Fatal road accident victims mostly comprised young people who were in their productive age groups.
- The nation's young adults in the 18-45 age group accounted for 70 percent of the total victims in 2020.
- People in the 18-60 working-age group have accounted for 86 percent of all total fatalities related to road accidents.
