Once upon a time, a parent would beat up the child who loves football, criticize the son who goes to the studio to record songs. 'I want you to be a doctor or lawyer' they'll say. 'Study Engineering so you will be employed in an oil company'. 'Get a government job for stability' and the list is endless.
Then in terms of learning a trade, you ponder 'which is more lucrative? I learnt tailors make a lot... how about hairdressers? Ooh, plumbers make cool cash.... but that oga welder is making millions on a monthly basis'. Do you want to kill yourself? Today it's computer programming, yesterday it was poultry farmers, tomorrow it might be bricklayers. Besides, you need to invest time in a field to be well known by people for patronage. Except you are willing to perform miracles on both the delivery and efficiency of your job.
Imagine trying to do all the businesses/occupations that is more lucrative today, and tomorrow it's a write off... Now the in thing is the tech industry, social media and computer programming. When they started, it probably wasn't fetching any money and might have encountered loses a few times or more. Remember when car dealers were the richest. Even there was a time when the number of children you have determined your wealth when the major means of livelihood was farming. So I watched this art programme on TV and the man was told to give the price of an art piece. Of course the amount ran into millions. Of course, I would not be willing to buy such for even a few thousands. But those who value art, would scramble and it might be auctioned to the highest bidder. With this scenario, someone who values what you've got will locate you when it's your time and will be willing to part with something substantial to get a piece of what you've got.
Many would have been great if they followed that passion and stuck with it. Their time would have come. Chance would have been created for them. Thus we hear stories of regret. 'If I knew musicians would be so famous, I would have pursued my career in music. I had an opportunity to be chosen as one of Nigeria's Super Eagles but my parents said I should study medicine'...And the list is endless.
Despite all these, I have realised that time and chance will happen to everyone irrespective of what you do. Yes people have fried akara and built houses. I know a beggar who was a landlord to two houses, he continued begging. God is that merciful. Remain in your passion, purpose and calling and one day, it will be your time and you will get your chance also.... And you won't have to do anything different from what you've been doing already.
