The QUAD summit 2022 has been concluded in Tokyo recently. The leaders of the Quad nations—Australia, India, Japan, and the United States attended summit from May 24, 2022 in Tokyo for the fourth time and the second time in person.
About QUAD:
The Quad which is also known as Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, is an informal group was created of the United States, Australia, India and Japan. The group has become more active in recent years to counter China's strive and territorial claims in the Indo-Pacific.
QUAD was constituted in the wake of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami to organize humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. The Quad has turned a leading regional partnership committed to advancing a common vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific through practical cooperation on diverse 21st-century challenges.
Agreements & MOUs during summit:
With six leader-level working groups on COVID-19 Response and Global Health Security, Climate, Critical and Emerging Technologies, Cyber, Space, and Infrastructure, the Quad (member countries are building habits of cooperation among our four countries that will hold a more peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
India, the US, Japan and Australia have decided to invest $50 billion on infrastructure development in the Indo-Pacific region over the next five years as part of a series of steps announced under the Quad initiative to get "tangible benefits to the region".
The Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness:
At the Tokyo Summit, the Quad leaders will glad to accept a major maritime initiative named 'the Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness (IPMDA)'.
Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness (IPMDA) will make consultations with regional partners that will bid a near-real-time, integrated, and cost-effective maritime domain awareness picture. This initiative will enhance the ability of partners in the Pacific Islands, Southeast Asia, and the Indian Ocean region to fully monitor the waters on their shores and, in turn, to uphold a free and open Indo-Pacific.
The Quad Vaccine Partnership and Global Health Security:
The Quad is dedicated to holding its global leadership in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and bolstering global health security. Quad partners have collectively supplied 257 million safe and effective doses to the Indo-Pacific up to date.
100 million dollar support:
The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and EXIM India consorted to support a $100 million facility, which will enhance the Indian health care sector, including global capacity for COVID-19 countermeasures.
Agreements between India-Japan:
At the summit, India and Japan has signed six agreements in the areas described below:
- Cyber security
- Sustainable urban development
- Wastewater management
- Water supply and connectivity
- India-Japan Industrial Competitiveness Partnership Roadmap
India and Japan has also deal 7 loan agreements for official development assistance in areas of healthcare, connectivity, healthcare, sewage and water supply.
The two sides also corresponded on work plans with the import of Japanese apples to India & export of Indian mangoes to Japan.
India-US at Summit:
The US investment incentive agreement will give drift to investments in key sectors in India.
Gift from India to QUAD leaders:
Gift to Japan: PM Modi gifted his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida, a Wooden Hand carved box with a Rogan Painting.
Gift to Australia: Australia's newly elected Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been gifted a Gond Art Painting, which is one of the most admired tribal art forms.
Gift to US: PM Modi gifted US President Joe Biden an intricate Sanjhi Art Panel based on the theme of Thakurani Ghat from Mathura by a National Awardee.
Gift to PMs of Japan: Former Japan PMs have been gifted with Pattumadai Silk Mats from Tamil Nadu which is named after its place of origin.
Next QUAD summit:
Australia's new Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced with the three other Quad leaders on confirmation that next year third QUAD summit will be organized by Australia in their country.
