When Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the repairs of the walls of Jerusalem were going so well—that the breaks in the wall were being fixed—they were absolutely furious. They put their heads together and decided to fight against Jerusalem and create as much trouble as they could. We countered with prayer to our God and set a round-the-clock guard against them. Nehemiah 4:7-9 MSG
This morning I awoke excited and glad that I could celebrate a land mark children day. Fifty plus children day have seen me on this earth. But then something struck a chord within my soul. I'm studying the book of Nehemiah again and the insights are mind boggling to say the least. As I pondered on a few stuff it hit me. Like Jerusalem my nation and world is under attack. Traditional walls of safety are broken and it is easy to bridge into the lives of our children. As I studied in the message version the verses today struck me.
It raised a question to me. When under attack what is my go to action? I ask you to consider this too. Learning to hear the voice of God is an amazing feeling. Also knowing that the presence of God is right there has a warming effect on a person you know. I saw how Sanballat and co were hell bent on making sure the bridges of hope for Israel do not stand as they attempted to stop the building of the walls. The most hit wall in society today is the family. Traditional roles have lost their savory taste and everyone does as they please. So how should we act in our world today?
Nehemiah had a very smart opinion on things. Unperturbed by the wave of discord and attacks the word used by the message Bible captures the condition properly and I quote, "We countered with prayer to our God and set a round-the-clock guard against them." We countered! Please shout that to high heavens we countered... Satan has no rights over our children and we counter his goons. How do we counter? By prayer folks prayer. This weekend I'm calling upon my friends to bond with me as we pray for our children beginning today from 8pm. Going forward we would pick Friday evening for an hour to pray for our children.
No counter was better than this and it saved Nehemiah and prepared him to rebuild the walls in a record time of just fifty eight days. Now the real drama of this rebuilding of the wall is this, we could line four cars beside each other and race across the wall. Please I ask how did they do that in fifty eight days? I assure you it did not happen ordinarily and please note the worked day and night. Preceding this statement of the counter by prayer they took turns to guard as they built the walls. They built from different areas making sure the enemy could not attack.
This simple fact is why we must pray. Our counter for the enemy is we gather and pray for our children. I have as a coach always loved counter attacking football, I also note that the speed of execution also makes it an effective system in football. But I also recognized that it was a waste of resources if I didn't have players built for speed and effectiveness. That means you need a certain blend of players to achieve your goal. Nehemiah took his tools of ragged returned exiles, broken priests, dejected community called the remnant and yes a nation in peril can still be saved. We see that He focused on the Godhead and not his ability. Can we do just that and focus for the sum total care of our children? Tonight for an hour we shall pray for our children as led.
