This morning I am led to speak to the male child. Yesterday was world boys day. We focus so much on the girl child we forget that the male, if neglected is the biggest problem of society. Let me explain briefly. As of 2021, There are 3,970,238,390 or 3,970 million or 3.97 billion males in the world, representing 50.42% of the world population. The population of females in the world is estimated at 3,904,727,342 or 3,905 million or 3.905 billion, representing 49.58% of the world population. So says United Nation. The question is how many of those men are viable responsible father's or men when a glaring stat hits us on men.
My son asked questions because God had granted him a keen intuitive mind and I knew under God I had to answer the questions as God expected me to do. I also knew I needed to point him further to God as his mum had led him to Christ already which still hurts by the way; but with good reason, I will add it was worth it that she did. I also had to inform him that research in 21 countries of the world in 2011 has shown that dysfunctional family life is the biggest problem, with fatherlessness at the centre of the problem. So fatherhood is something I needed to get him to understand and fast. I also noted that he is soft natured but needed to become firm and take authority over his siblings.
Fatherlessness is a major problem not just in Africa but across the world. In contemporary times, every country has the following as the biggest problems in society: Family, corruption, lack of morals and Education. In some cases, two more are added as drugs, violence and unemployment. That is not the scary part of a lack of good fathers within society. The scary part is the startling statistics below: • 63% of suicides come from fatherless homes; • 80% of rapists motivated by displaced anger come from fatherless homes; • 70% of juveniles in state-operated institutions come from fatherless homes; • 40% of all children do not live with their biological fathers; • 85% of children with behavioural problems come from fatherless homes; • 90% of homeless children come from fatherless homes; and • 71% of children who do not finish school come from fatherless homes. This accounts for the reason why it is pertinent that we re-jig our response to the boy and how we build the male child to lead the family cycle and rebuild the growing lack of fathers in the lives of children. My focus is not show that as uniquely made as we are today's passage says, So may we never be arrogant, or look down on another, for each of us is an original. We must forsake all jealousy that diminishes the value of others. So sire that male child and all beings are originals. Sin and environment of sin taints this original. Based on stats very few men are eligible for marriage and to become responsible fathers it means we must also focus on the male child as we have been doing with our sons to bring them up as responsible men and fathers. Africa and indeed the world needs men with character. I do not proclaim to be the best man. In fact I am one of the absent fathers who realized in time that my children need me to mold and shape them.
No wonder the Holy Writ says to train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old enough to understand, he would never depart. Yes we are originals but we should not operate with arrogance. It has cost too many deaths and destruction of lives with issues of domestic violence and all sorts. We have taken deliberate steps to make our sons and all the men in our lives know they are originals and unique and no two of us are the same but the fact that Africans learn by story telling has pushed and keeps pushing us to stretch the threshold and reach a new generation of boys. Dadin Kowa did not burn as our advocacy to youth through sports kept good lads from killing the Ruga Fulani heads son and to this day there remains peace. When they realized they could even have killed me who was helping them, they froze and we spoke to them.
Today most have gone ahead to get an education, skill and even marry. It means as men we must be intentional in how we deal with the boy child. He has a lot to carry and must know why God designed them the way we are. I am looking for men who are willing to spend at least thirty minutes to an hour with boys we are mentoring to show them what it takes to be a man of integrity. I have a group of men already and we call ourselves Men Of Honor. Will reach out to them and need to have a larger pool of men across nations willing to just be vulnerable and be fathers to some boy who needs one. It begins with you sire! Yes! You!
