At the end of each month, I like looking at the events happening in the following month. Mainly to see if I can get any early bird tickets and so I can plan my calendar accordingly.
I do recommend checking out what events are happening where you live at the start of the month so you don't miss out on events you really want to attend. Plus, saving a bit of money by ordering in advance is always a bonus.
Leeds Events
Here are just a handful of events happening in Leeds in April 2022.
Canary Bar Acoustic Music
A distinctive and cosy new bar and kitchen opened on Leeds Dock called Canary Bar. The bar hosts a live acoustic session each Sunday at 5 pm. If you are a local musician, check it out!
Royal Armouries Museum
The Royal Armouries has the UK's national collection of arms and armour. The free-to-visit museum also hosts various events throughout the year that you need to keep your eye out for as tickets can sell out fast, especially during school holidays.
RA/ID Escape Room Experience
Go on a mission of cosmic proportions with this escape room experience at The Royal Armouries.
The event is available on Saturdays and Sundays between 10:20 am to 4:20 pm. Booking tickets is advisable, so you do not miss out on the experience.
Can you save the universe while discovering the mysterious around the museum?
Jousting Tournament
If you want to see knights in armour riding upon well trained, magnificent horses, then you need to check out the jousting tournaments at The Royal Armouries.
The jousting tournaments take place on Friday 15th April, Saturday 16th April, Sunday 17th April and Monday 18th April. There are two shows on each of these days at 12 and 3 pm. These tournaments are extremely entertaining, and the one I have previously attended had audience participation.
The tickets are relatively affordable, with child tickets (£5) costing half the price of adult tickets (£10).
Nation of Shopkeepers Quiz
The Nation of Shopkeepers in Leeds is home to food, beer, art, live music and other events. One such event is the quiz that they have every Monday from 7 pm. It is only £1 per person to enter, with the main prize being a £50 bar tab!
Originally, this event was known as the Leeds record and book fair, but now it is known as the Leeds Record Fair.
When I first attended the Leeds record and book fair, I remember feeling disappointed that there was only one little table with books, so I am glad they changed the event's name, as it is an excellent record fair. The event takes place at the Kirkgate Indoor Market on the second Saturday of each month. There are approximately 70+ tables of vinyl records to browse through between the two halls.
The Wardrobe
The Wardrobe has everything from delicious food to live music and comedy shows.
COBO: Comedy Shutdown - Spring Tour
COBO comedy is 'a range of shows celebrating comedy of black origin'. These shows are all about celebrating experienced, upcoming and new black comedians who are ready to make you hold onto your sides with laughter.
The Spring Tour is stopping off in Leeds at The Wardrobe on Sunday, 17th April 2022. This comedy shutdown is sure to be a memorable event with high-quality comedians!
The Science of Psychedelics
Along with live music and comedy shows, The Wardrobe also has enlightening talks such as The Science of Psychedelics. The Science of Psychedelics is taking place on Tuesday 19th April 2022, with doors open at 6:30 pm, and the talk starts at 7 pm, followed by a Q&A.
Dr Chris Timmermann is the speaker for the event, and he will outline the science behind well-known psychedelics.
Kirkstall Abbey has a creative and fun event between 2nd April 2022 and 17th April 2022! You can round up the lost flock in the lost sheep trail, but the sheep are not ordinary sheep, as they are rainbow, polka dot and gingham sheep dotted around, ready for you to spot.
You can explore the ruins while you spot the sheep, the perfect outing for the whole family. You could even bring a little picnic to enjoy on your outing.
Mahogany Market
On Saturday 2nd April 2022, from 10 am until 6 pm, Leeds Corn Exchange is home to the Mahogany Market.
The free entry event will have approximately 20 local and national small black-owned businesses. From hair care and beauty to clothing, drinks and food, Mahogany Market, the Corn Exchange will be home to a range of stalls to enjoy.
Leeds Playhouse
After my introduction to the wonderful world of theatre last year, it is no surprise that Leeds Playhouse makes an appearance on this list.
Leeds PlayhouseHedwig and the angry inchSay yes to Tess
Say yes to Tess
You will have to be quick for this, as Say Yes to Tess is only available till the 2nd of April 2022. This production features Tess, who moves back to Leeds, West Yorkshire, after a breakup. Feeling lost and slightly dishearted about certain life circumstances, Tess' life takes a drastic turn when she meets the Yorkshire party, which leads to her standing in the 2017 UK General Election.
Hedwig
Now, onto a musical with Hedwig and the angry inch, which is playing at Leeds Playhouse from the 2nd of April until the 23rd of April. Described as a darkly humourous self-love story, this musical delves into topics such as gender identity, acceptance and freedom.
Some performances have an after-show discussion, where the audience can discuss topics present in the production, so keep your eye out for those tickets if that interests you.
The Gruffalo
There is something for everyone at Leeds Playhouse, as they have a selection of stories that kids will enjoy! For example, The Gruffalo is playing on the 29th and 30th of April, but you should be quick as there are not many shows available on these days.
Leeds Grand Theatre
Another theatre on the list, with a collection of outstanding performances in April 2022. Leeds Grand Theatre, or the 'Grand Old Lady of Leeds' as it is affectionally known, not only hosts engaging performances, it is also home to some stunning and intricate architecture. Victorian Velvet, ornate plasterwork work and a Waterford Crystal chandelier are just some of the staple pieces of this 1878 building.
School of Rock
A Broadway hit musical, School of Rock, is arriving at Leeds Grand Theatre between the 4th of April and the 9th of April 2022.
The performance follows the plot of the iconic movie, as a wannabe rock star poses as a substitute teacher when he has cashflow problems.
14 songs feature in this musical, along with a talented band.
The story followers 15-year-old Christopher, who is exceptionally gifted at maths but knows 'very little about human beings'. Christopher is unexpectedly caught up in a murder mystery involving the neighbour's dog and must embark on a journey to discover the true culprit.
When I was younger, I remember reading this book and being completely enthralled by the tale. I would love to see this performance; however, the overall cost is a tad out of my price range.
Sausage and Cider Festival
The sausage and cider festival is returning to Leeds this year, but it is being held at The Royal Armouries this time.
Now, this is an event I am looking forward to, especially since I missed out on tickets in previous years. This time my friends and I bought our tickets in advance, and with the event taking place just over the road from where I live, it will certainly be an entertaining event. With the event being held at The Royal Armouries, it means we can wander around the exhibits.
Summary
Those are just a handful of the events happening in Leeds in April! If you know of any other events in the area, let me know. I love seeing what events are happening near me; even if I might not attend every event on this list, it is nice to share local events with people who might be interested.
What events are you looking forward to in April 2022?
