Photo of the original Tree Tops Hotel, Kenya (1951). Taken from the book: ' Treetops Hotel' by Eric Sherbrooke Walker - who recounts how he came to build the hotel, opened in 1932, destroyed by a Mau Mau uprising in 1954 and rebuilt in 1957.
Frequented by many famous names, from Lord Baden-Powell, Charlie Chaplin, Joan Crawford and the British Royal Family.
Most famously the location where Princess Elizabeth was staying when her father, King George VI died. Recounted by Jim Corbett (acting as a guide for the Royals at the time) in his final book, 'Tree Tops' - "She went up a Princess - came down A Queen"!!!
Eric Sherbrooke also recounts the visit by the Royals and Jim Corbett in his own book, "Treetops Hotel":
"The Princess spent most of the night sitting on the balcony watching the animals below by the artificial moonlight. Several times during the darkness I climbed about the tree and always found dear old Jim Corbett sitting on the top step of the thirty-foot ladder in his British Warm, keeping guard with his gun across his knees".
