New post on Texas Wesleyan Mass Communication Internship
Two events are coming up that I will be observing. The creation of the Black History Month videos and the Joy campaign podcast over mental health. On Tuesday, February 8th, I was asked to come up with questions to ask at both events. The Black History Month video will focus on Black Doctors and their success. Following the health and wellness theme. For the Joy campaign podcast, I looked through Dr. Artee Gandhi's articles on Children's mental health and opioid abuse and created questions.
Questions I typed out for the podcast with Dr. Artee Gandhi.
On Thursday, February 10th, I attended the weekly PR team meeting. I enjoy sitting in on these meetings and seeing how the process works. Everyone works together in a team setting and collaborate. I also contributed to the collaboration, which was new for me. I'm normally quiet, but it was exciting for me, even if it was something as little as finding a possible source for a writer. Next, I helped create a caption for a social media post.
On Friday, February 11th, I went in on a bonus day to watch the production of the new podcast series. Going to the recording was the highlight of my week. I learned so much about creating podcasts from the media engineer, and he gave life advice as well. I also got to see what the interaction between a host and their guest is supposed to look like. The conversation was free and natural, and I hope to one day learn those skills.

Here are a few tips I learned (I have learned most in class, but it was interesting to see them firsthand).:
Podcasts are raw because people love authenticity. The more you are yourself, the better. People don't like perfection.
Talk like you are having a normal conversation because it is not a performance.
Before starting the podcast, if you are interviewing, debrief beforehand and talk about what's off-limits.
After thanking everyone for joining, jump right into the introduction of the guest. Introduce the guest as soon as possible.
Make sure when you end, you have a call to action.
Try to stay away from prerecorded intros because you want them to be genuine.
Logic X pro is a good audio workstation, and it is user-friendly.
If you are the host, make sure you are listening to the responses. That will help with the flow of the conversation and help you create good transitions into the following questions.
When recording a podcast, think about the average commute time. It helps keep your audience's attention and gives a higher chance of them finishing it.
When the guest is speaking, try to keep interaction at a minimum. For example, "mhm, okay, right." Sometimes they indicate that you aren't listening.
Do not leave a long break between podcast seasons.
A white room/Infinity wall helps eliminate corners that people may focus on in a video instead of the talent.
