Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, hearing with the ears of another, and feeling with the heart of another. It's like giving someone a psychological hug. It is more than a mindset, it is a learned skill. I'm always willing to put myself in someone's else shoes. Unless they wear crocs. Screw that. Instead of putting others in their place, put yourself in their shoes. Nike? Damn it. You're lucky.
Empathyisn't just listening. It's asking the questions whose answers need to be listened to. Empathy requires inquiry as much as imagination. Empathy requires knowing you know nothing. Empathy means acknowledging a horizon of context that extends perpetually beyond what you can see. Empathy is complicated. The problem with being empathetic is that you even feel sorry for those who hurt you. Nah...give them a black eye and drink some yoghurt.
You don't need religionto have morals. If you can't determine right from wrong, you lack empathy, not religion. I am not a fan of justifying bad behavior or justifying why people are the way they are. I think that's a cop out. I don't have a lot of empathy for that. The ugliest thing I have seen is a human without empathy. When you lack empathy and laugh at another persons pain. It only shows who you are. A psychopath.
Empathy has the ability to move us towards deeper, more meaningful relationships. But what is empathy? Empathy has many layers, as well as many definitions…all of which I am learning and exploring. Empathy connects us. And it reminds us that we are not alone. Empathy builds trust, the heart of relationships. Empathy is a choice. Everyone is born with various levels of empathetic capacity. However, it is a skill that may be developed and sharpened.
When you think about those in your life, how well do you listen and demonstrate empathy? Do you feel like you have a deep understanding of their story? Do you feel WITH them? And do they feel WITH you? Do you feel heard? Do you feel like they understand YOUR story?
I am here. I am listening. Thank you for joining me on this journey as we discover the complexities of empathy in education together.
