"Sit with it instead of trying to drink it away, smoke it away, sleep it away, or run away from it. You have to feel it to heal." – Rebel Thriver

It's normal to want to run away from the pain. For who wants to live with all those awful memories, and the onslaught of emotions that can hit us out of nowhere.

But although it may be tempting to pour ourselves a drink, or to reach for the cookies, or to push it down inside, it's not a real solution; the relief is temporary.

And, yes, it feels unfair. We didn't do this to ourselves.

But we owe it to ourselves to try to help ourselves to heal.

And we do that by allowing all the pain to bubble up. By admitting that we're hurting, and the pain's unbearable.

And as we give space to our feelings, we'll find we start to heal. Nothing too life-changing or dramatic at the start …

But the first step on the journey. And a step towards our freedom.
