Introduction
Valentine's Day, Palentine's day, and Galentine's day are just around the corner, which means it is the time to celebrate all kinds of love!
I tried not to overlap with my 18 ideas for Valentines Day at home blog post, which I posted last year! I did pretty well, as I thought of new activities to add and ways to liven up the previously mentioned ideas.
Creative Valentine's Day activties
You might have to do some of these activities around Valentine's Day, rather than on the day as places can get quite busy and crowded.
There is a mix of affordable and expensive Valentine's Day activities for you to do, and I've attempted to list them from lowest cost to highest.
Movie night surprise
If you are anything like me, you can't easily decide what film to watch, which wastes time. Get everyone who is involved in your Valentine's Day activities, whether that is just you, your friends or your partner, to write down some movies on bits of paper, put them in a hat, and watch the first one you pick out.
This is a creative way to watch films you might not have considered and stops you from wasting time scrolling through your streaming platform trying to decide on a movie.
I know it might be a well-known website already, but my partner and I have only recently started using the Movie Recommendation Date Night site. You each put in a movie you want to watch, and it recommends a happy medium between the two. It's a great tool if you can't decide which movie to watch.
Book swap date
Find yourself a charity shop or library, and each person picks out a book for the other. You could even switch books from your own bookshelves. Read the books together or explain why you picked that specific book for the other.
Time capsule
This Valentine's Day activity is an excellent way to capture the moment right now, with your friends or partner. Don't worry; you don't have to bury it; you can just put it somewhere safe to open in a few years to reflect on the time spent together and see how you grow.
Museum trip
Check out the local Museums in your area, and see which one piques your interest. Alone, with friends or with your partner, museum's are a great option.
Venture back
Venture back with your Valentine's Day companion to the place you met or the place you grew up. Take it in turns, sharing childhood memories or fond memories of each other.
Boardgame night
This activity will always be on my list, as board games are fun to play, as there are so many different ones to try.
Whether you are dusting off a traditional board game or picking out a new one together, it is a fun way to spend the night! I highly recommend P for Pizza, as it is a fun, quick-fire game to play with your partner or a group of friends.
Puzzles
On the subject of puzzles, why not put together a jigsaw! If you already have a jigsaw, great, this will be an inexpensive Valentine's Day activity. If you like the jigsaw, you could always frame it afterwards.
Portrait date
Pick your preformed media, and draw/paint/sketch your companion! My partner and I tried this once, and we are not great artists, so the results were funny, and we had a good laugh at the end.
Creative cocktail
Create a signature cocktail for your friend or partner, but you have to explain why you used specific ingredients.
Friends that eat together stay together
This is a great group activity for Valentine's Day! Allocate different parts of a menu to your friends, and each cook, bake or make something to bring to a festive food gathering. For example, one person makes the drink; another makes the starter, another makes the main etc.
Kitchen date
On the subject of food, why not cook or bake something in the kitchen together. My partner and I try to cook together throughout the week, and it is a lovely activity to do.
Deep box frame creation
Gather some sentimental momentums you have accumulated from your time spent with your partner/friend, and create a wondrous piece of art using a deep box frame. You could each create one, then switch, or create them together to commemorate the time you have shared.
Hobbycraft have a wide selection of deep box frames if you fancy having a go at this challenge.
Quiz night
Many bars will host quiz nights throughout the week. Find out when/if your local bar hosts one and attend with your Valentine's Day companion.
Random restaurant
If cooking isn't your cup of tea, go on a wander and pick a random restaurant you haven't been to before. You will have to book a restaurant for Valentine's Day, as they do get busy, but try out one you haven't been to yet.
Arcade moments
Be a kid again and go to an arcade to enjoy some classic arcade games, along with some newer games. We have a fairly local arcade club with several floors of classic games and more recent consoles. From Pacman, Burgertime, Donkey Kong and Frogger, to Galaga, OutRun, Qix, Street Fighter and even pinball machines, the Arcade Club has something for everyone.
Let me know if you recognise any of those games in the comments.
Bottomless brunch
I have recently discovered the amazing date idea of a bottomless brunch, especially when you pair it with fast service, as you are never left without an empty glass, in my experience at least.
Make sure you check the menu before booking to ensure they have a selection of drinks and food that you and your companion enjoy.
Top tip: I recently discovered bottomless brunches in my area are cheaper throughout the week. Always check the pricing options if you have the flexibility.
This Valentine's Day activity randomly came about as both my partner and I dislike clothes shopping. It was more fun shopping for the other, so we decided to pick some outfits out for the other to try on! Try it yourself, and see what your partner/friend picks out for you.
Build it together
Whether you are building the Millennium Falcon out of Lego or building a coffee table from Ikea, building something together can actually be quite fun.
Compete to build the best creation out of Lego in a timed challenge or turn the latest Ikea haul into a challenge.
I remember building a coffee table with my partner and him laughing as I aimlessly tried to put it together, with him saying through laughter, 'read the instructions'.
Saucy
For all the hot sauce lovers out there, why not have a hot sauce inspired Valentine's Day activity. Invest in different bottles of hot sauce you've never tried, and cook some food you can dip into each sauce. Keep the spice low if you do not have a lot of spicy food.
Grow your own
Another creative Valentine's Day activity you could do is grow your own plant. There are many grow your own plant kits you could try, or you can get the basic plant growing essentials yourself.
Pizza party
On the subject of making your own things, try your hand at making your own pizza with your partner or friend! You could even fly solo and make a pizza all to yourself!
Pottery Creation
Call me strange, but I have always wanted to make pottery with my partner or a friend. I think it would be a creative experience, plus, you can paint or create so much, depending on where you go! You could paint coasters, mugs, piggy banks or more!
My partner once did a somewhat inexpensive version of this at home, where we painted snail pots! You can check out the results here. They look alright, kinda.
Go-karting
Try your hand at go-karting and compete for first place! Whether it's a double date or friend group hangout, go-karting is a delightful Valentine's Day activity.
You could even make it extra weird or fun by dressing up as Mario, Bowser and Princess Daisy (I could say Peach, but Daisy needs more recognition).
Escape Room
Sticking with the double date or friend date idea, why not try your hand at an escape room.
Kitty Cafe
I am not sure how common Kitty Cafe is, but it is the purrfect (I couldn't help myself) date idea for animal lovers. You get to enjoy some food while cats lounge around.
This will be an activity I do with friends, as my partner is unfortunately allergic.
Explore somewhere new
Go on a trip together and explore somewhere new, whether a new city, village or town a train ride away or a mini-vacation somewhere further afield.
Tasting events
There are so many different tasting events you could go to; you just have to see what your local area offers. From the traditional wine tasting and brewery tour and tastings to tea tasting sessions and beer and cheese tasting events, you might find something suitable for you and your companion/s.
Comedy night
If you like a good laugh, see if there are any comedy nights in your area that you can attend.
Theatre trip
See what is available at your local theatre! Dressup, go for a meal before or after, and see a performance you.
Side note: I think an activity such as going to the theatre or the cinema is great to do on a first date, especially if you are nervous. You can do the activity, and then you have something to talk about after, in which you grab a drink or food together.
Hot air balloon
A random Valentine's Day activity, but one which intrigues me, a hot air balloon ride. It would be quite the experience to look at the world from above, with your friend or partner by your side.
A pretty picturesque date idea, unless your companion is scared of heights. Make sure they are not frightened of heights before you book.
Steam train experience
Plan a day out on Steam train if seeing the countryside and enjoying a bygone era is something that interests you. Many Steam Train experiences offer a nostalgic day out, with dining optional.
While expensive, this activity is on my bucket list, so it had to make an appearance here.
You've seen my Christmas movie drinking game; now it's time for the rom-com drinking game! Personally, I am not a fan of romance films, but some rom-coms are alright, but they can be better with a game.
Please drink responsibly.
Summary
I tried to incorporate a range of activities for everyone, as we all like to spend the day differently. Full disclosure: this blog post's original title was 50 creative Valentine's Day activities for you, but I found myself talking about traditional date ideas or very similar date ideas.
It doesn't really matter what you do on the day, as long as you spend it with someone you care about or love, yourself included. If you want more ideas on how to spend Valentine's Day solo, check out 24 more ideas here!
