We sleep because we have melatonin hormones that are secreted when our body gets tired and we really do not have to be active anymore. This is mostly during night times, except in special cases such as for the night owls who have altered their hormonal secretions due to repeated behaviour of sleeping later than everyone else.
Melatonin helps us to relax, rest, take a siesta and just calm the body down.
The opposite of that is cortisol, which helps us to be active and strong in the morning or afternoon when we really have to be active. It works very closely with thyroid hormones from the thyroid glands and give us the energy that we need for the day.
Sleep is also important for physiological purposes other than the biological bit such as:
To relieve stress
To handle trauma
To rest the brain and muscles
To become more beautiful
To think better
You should sleep.
Sleeping is also a sign of how active or lazy one is just by looking at the amount of time that you spend doing it.
