with sunset behind me

tall, tall arc of rainbow loomed ahead

between banks of gray cloud

settled over mcminnville

mist softening the view

through my windshield

could not obscure a brilliant

band  of every color

low against the hills to the north

or, against the violet, the mirrored

imaged of fainter second bow

above them both, dark gray

and, above that, disjointed, paler offset

to the south from the line of arc

– i'd never seen that before

though i am a delighter in rainbows –

then, stranger still, a hint of third rainbow against the brilliant double

the sunlight behind me shifted

and for long minutes

a fourth dim bow of washed-out yellow like gold flecks in a gushing stream

and then, in awe, i glimpsed

ethereal promise of yet a fifth
