Why learn Cree or nêhiyawêwin?
- it's the language that is spoken by the original people of this area
- if you are Cree, it is a way to honor your ancestors
- if you aren't Cree, it is a way to honor the ancestors of Cree people, a sign of respect
- speaking Cree will make an elder smile
- learning Cree is an act of reconciliation by helping to restore what was taken through the residential school system
- learning a language is good for your brain
- you can finally understand what your grandparents were saying when they didn't want you to understand
- it provides a deeper understanding of the values within Cree culture or connection to nêhiyaw pimâtisiwin (Cree way of life)
- restoring Indigenous language is one of the calls to action within the Truth and Reconciliation Report
- language loss is happening in this area and most fluent speakers are elderly, so we need to start now
- humor expressed in Cree is so much funnier than the translation
- welcoming people in their language is good for business
- studies show that decisions made in your second language are more reason-driven than those made in your native language
