Mark 9:23-24 – "What do you mean, 'If I can'? Jesus asked. 'Anything is possible if a person believes.' The father instantly cried out, 'I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!'
This morning, when I was doing my prayer time, I came across this particular passage. I have read it many times in the past. But today, it had a new meaning, which is what I love about spending time with God and reading the scripture. Even though I've read a passage over and over in the past, I can read it again today and find something new that will help me on my journey.
Here is the story of a man who comes to Jesus asking for his help to heal his son. Ultimately the young boy is healed. But what I learned in my reading today was something new: What I saw was a story about a healing that Christ did even before He addressed the man's son. Here, He first addressed the father's heart. Jesus asked him, "Do you believe?" For the father, he wanted to believe but he was honest and recognized that there was doubt in his heart.
On our journey, we all have obstacles and moments during our day when it demands us to commit to a place of faith. Oftentimes, that comes from the exercise of our walk with Christ. But it also is a gift of the Spirit.
Here we see a man who was honest and admitted that he had doubt in his heart. He didn't seek to commit that he could overcome under his own resolve. What he did was to commit, in honesty, his heart to Christ and ask for a gift of faith.
Whether it be today or whether it be tomorrow, you will be facing challenges in your walk with Christ. Remember faith comes through exercise on our journey, but it also is a gift of the Spirit. Seek the Spirit to bring you the gift of faith.
