Generally, many countries do not give accurate COVID updates over weekends. When Christmas falls on a weekend, then this is even more so. I made an update to my post yesterday as the global data had changed overnight. On 23 December the world recorded, for the first time ever, more than 1 million new COVID cases. (It took more than nine weeks to reach the first million on 1 April 2020.)

Among the larger countries, the USA stands out like a sore thumb. Two weeks ago the country was moving closer to 120,000 new cases per day. Last week it was on its way to 150,000 and today it is moving towards an average of 250,000 new cases per day. Last week the infection rate was 0.29%. Today it moved to 0.46%. On the positive side, the death rate is slightly lower this week.

At this stage, the news about the death of archbishop Desmond Tutu is the main news in most major newspapers across the world and there are very few noteworthy articles regarding COVID-19. I expect as the festive season passes, that we will once again get further updates from responsible journalists and scientists about their views on the pandemic.
