I hope everyone is having a great week! I'm super excited to share ABC of Feelings by Bonnie Lui with you today! This is a wonderful book that can be used to help students learn their ABCs and the importance of expressing their feelings.

Quick summary. Readers are taken on a journey through emotions that begin with each letter of the alphabet. Readers learn about the definitions of emotions from A (anxious) to Z (zany).

Critique. My students (all future teachers) LOVED this book! They enjoyed how the book takes readers on a journey of a variety of emotions from kind to overwhelmed to scared to determined. The book's authenticity is revealed in the way it captures both people's highest and toughest emotions. The book normalizes emotions, sharing that the ways we feel are what make us human. The illustrations are vibrant, and the definitions of the emotions provide opportunities for children and adults to discuss whether they have ever felt the emotions shared.

Teaching ideas. Here are some teaching ideas for ABC of Feelings:

  • Ask students to select one of the emotions featured in the book. Next, have students use StoryboardThat to create a scene in which a character feels that emotion.
  • Have students photograph or draw an ABC book of emotions. Then, have students create a digital, sharable text with Animoto. This can be a wonderful component of a SEL unit. (Below is a video from the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning.)

A wonderful book that several of my students have wanted to share with their own students, ABC of Feelings earns five stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
