"Make mine a puppy please!"

Dec 30

It began months ago when I started on a doll for our granddaughter's Christmas gift.

Afterwards, I realized I should make each of our four grandchildren a crocheted gift this year.

Our oldest granddaughter got an angel and the baby got four little ball animals: a bear, an owl, a fox, and a raccoon.

One evening as I was getting ready for bed I asked my husband, "What if we gave Bubba a puppy?"

Startled by my comment, he put down what he'd been reading and stared at me.

I laughed, "I meant what if I crocheted a puppy for him? Do you think he'd like a puppy?"

Relief spread across his face as he returned to his reading, "Yes, I'm sure he would."

I'd never made a puppy before and couldn't think where to begin.

After some Internet searches I had a rough idea and got to work.

It was a labor of love.

After many days, some of which I chose to ignore the puppy project because it wasn't going well, I finally managed to finish it with the announcement, "I never want to make another dog again."

I showed it to Jase.

"Nice Mom, but he needs a collar."

Not what I wanted to hear.

But he was right, so I found some red yarn and began trying to figure out how to make a collar.

When it was finished, I felt pleased.

It had some issues, but it would work.

Sitting t in the living room at our daughter's house, I watched our grandkids open their gifts.

Faye and Joy both liked theirs.

I felt nervous as Bubba pulled out the tissue paper, but his smile and comment caused me to relax.

He placed the puppy next to him and opened his a different present.

It was while I was trying to get the plastic holders off his new cars that it happened.

Joy had her sister's angel under one arm and was walking towards us.

I didn't really pay attention to her, since Bubba was eagerly awaiting his cars, but I noticed, she tucked his puppy under her other arm.

She started to head out of the room when Bubba noticed.

"That's my dog!"

Totally unaffected by this she tried to take off in a different direction, but too many adults apprehended her.

We tried giving her the doll I'd made.

She smiled, dropped the angel and tucked the doll under her arm.

Her little fingers gripping the dog as if to convince us of her resolution to keep it.

This began the fight.

At one point my mother turned to me and said, "Well, do yourself a favor, make Joy's puppy without spots, just brown."

I smiled ruefully at her.

"Unfortunately, I don't have any brown yarn, just some leftover tan."

During a conversation over the phone this past week our daughter said, "Yeah Mom, I almost took a video and sent it to you of Bubba and Joy fighting over the dog."

"Don't worry, I'm working on a puppy for Joy."

Thankfully, Joy's birthday is next week and the puppy in the photo is her gift from me.

It still needs eyes and a collar, but hopefully it will bring some peace to the siblings.

Joy only speaks when she feels inclined, but her actions have clearly stated: "Make mine a puppy please!"

I thank God for His blessings.

Not only has He given us these beautiful children and now grandchildren, but He continually uses them to teach me.

Psalm 25:4 KJV — Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths.

Dear Lord Jesus,

Thank You for Your Word. Thank You for teaching me how to crochet and how You are continually teaching me so many important things. Thank You. Lord, please defend the fatherless and the innocent. Lord, please protect the helpless and provide for the needy. Help me to recognize opportunities to help others and to be a blessing and encouragement to those around me. Lord, please continue to reach out to those who have yet to know You. Thank You for Your wonderful works and Your continual blessings. Thank You for Your love. Amen.
