We feel so inadequate sometimes
to bring a light to ward off the dark.
We are powerless to push aside its
breadth and height, its creeping edge.
We feel alone, that even together we must
reach for each other's hands,
walk one careful step,
one hard day at a time.
Yes, we feel overwhelmed,
undone.
That the dark, sometimes like water
tempting our immersion -
with its great body to envelop
and carry us to oblivion -
can seem a thought easier
than our burdens.
But to feel afraid perhaps,
is our signal to reach for hands of support,
for helpers holding gentle
torches in the night.
Yes, there is nothing that need be dealt with
alone.
And that is the light -
the light that sends the darkness to its knees.
How it only takes one candle
meeting another,
and the flame of love carried across a room
to light up all the cavernous corners.
Shadows, only specters we have not faced -
turned our lights upon.
