It’s definitely getting cold up in these parts. Feels like 45 degrees right now in Western NY. I have had to get used to saying “Western NY” and funnily enough, my own father doesn’t understand the nuance of it all. On the phone he will talk about “CNY” or Central NY as if it applies to me as well, because he doesn’t understand that Rochester is not in fact, CNY. It is very firmly WNY along with Buffalo. In Portland Oregon I would just tell everyone I was from “Upstate NY” even though I now realize, that is also inaccurate, and Upstate is really reserved for those cities and towns directly North of NYC. But people not from New York wouldn’t understand the nuance, and it’s just easier to basically say if you are from “the city” or “not the city”. Anyway back to the weather. It’s Fall. We have been enjoying looking at all our neighbor’s Halloween decorations and bemoaning the fact that we only have one single sad ceramic pumpkin to offer the street. But we do give out candy to trick or treaters on Halloween so I don’t feel too guilty. We at least perform our duty to the neighborhood there. This will be our very first Halloween in this house, on this street. According to our neighbors we get 70-100 kids on this street?! I am flabbergasted by that. Even at our last house we felt like we got a good amount and it definitely veered more towards the 10-20 count. I’m really excited for Halloween now. They said they move their firepit to the front yard on that day to hang out and give out candy. It sounds lovely, I think we will do the same. Maybe have the kitties out on leashes. Even though we don’t have kids, it is nice sometimes to interact with the normies who do have kids, and just be a part of the community, even though we don’t want any children ourselves. This is maybe the only community based holiday where we can. I’ve been trying to find some flickering light bulbs that I see everywhere. We also never got ourselves or our cats costumes. Haven’t had the time I guess, or the energy? Seth has been working until 7 PM most days lately, the big push before his game comes out on November 3rd (thank the lord above that it is finally coming out and maybe we will see some money from it, and also maybe he won’t have to work quite so late once everything calms down after the big launch), so when would we have time to go shopping for costumes or decorations or any of that? And last weekend we were busy both days with friends. This weekend we do have something going on Saturday, so Sunday will have to be the day we buy the candy and costumes. I put it in the calendar. If I don’t, I will forget all about it. It rained earlier today and it sounded really nice and cozy drizzling while I worked inside. You're currently a free subscriber to Letters from the Mire.
